Deal will be worth $36.175 million dollars and is for 5 years.  Contract will include over $20 million dollars in guaranteed money and pay him over $7 million dollars annually.  The deal keeps one of the premier tight ends in the league with the team that drafted him, and assures that he more than likely finish his career as a Charger.  The Chargers still need to iron out contracts with veterans Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill and Shawne Merriman.

This deal will probably pave the way for a potential contract extension for San Francisco 49er Tight End Vernon Davis.  Davis, entering the last year of his rookie contract had a breakout year in 2009, tying the league record of touchdown catches by a tight end at 13, and came within a drop in the end zone of a game in Seattle of breaking that record.  The 49ers have reported repeatedly that they do not want Davis to hit the open market and have been proactive in the past few years of locking up their own young talent.
