When you think of a college professor what do you imagine? Strict, controlling, knowledgeable… well, I’ll let you in on a little secret… the teachers are a little lost too! Every year Wisconsin’s Beloit college sits down to put together a list for all of their teaching staff, not a list of the newest ways kids can cheat or who the latest boy band is… instead they hand out a list of “cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall.”
Beloit calls it the Mindset List.
Developed back in 98′ by faculty members Tom McBride & Ron Nief… they had one goal in mind, to help the school’s professors avoid “dated references” that kids entering school wouldn’t understand.
#28. They’ve never recognized that pointing to their wrists was a request for the time of day.
… they all have clocks on their phones! I am guilty of this though… haven’t worn a watch in almost 4 years.
So where does the class of 2014 come into play (that is assuming they don’t all die part way into their Junior year)? They’re more digital, of course.
Amazingly, very few entering college this year have ever written in cursive (which I used to get my ass chewed out for… bastards!). And this mobile phone generation has “never twisted the coiled handset wire aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on the phone.”
Imagine the fact that it’s on a rare occasion that they even fire up the old computer and send off an email. Why? because it’s usually too slow! Freakin A!
The class also believes that there have always been “hundreds of cable channels but nothing to watch” and that “Russians and Americans have always been living together in space.”
In addition to the items about digital habits, the list includes a trove of cultural references that can either make you feel really old or remind you how quickly life moves, especially in this digital age.
