Sam Raimi, the guy that brought you Spiderman and the Evil Dead has signed on to direct Disney’s adaptaion of Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Along with this news is the tease that Robert Downey Jr. is in discussions to play the title character of Oz. How sick is that? Downey has given the project a lukewarm reception, but after witnessing the billion dollar success of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland earlier this year, his interest has certainly been peaked. Following up his wise choices of Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and Sherlock Holmes, this one almost seems like a no brainer. It will probably all depend on the script, which is reportedly being handled by David Lindsay-Abaire, who just adapted his Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole into a drama that will be released through Lionsgate and is starring Nicole Kidman and Arron Eckhart.
Raimi intends to start production next year, so this movie is still a ways out. We will keep you posted as more news develops. Cause that’s what we do.
