The great and power Netflix spoke today that they may offer a streaming only service in the United States, following their forray into Canada recently with a streaming service (story here).
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings indicated, “We are now a streaming service that offers DVD’s by mail.” Estimates by the company indicated that in the 4th quarter of this year, the company will exceed minutes watched via DVD with minutes streamed online.
While we are not saying this spells the end for the DVD and Blu-ray, it still shows that the shift will be away from physical discs by mail. Leading to ever-present quandary of if the country has enough bandwidth to support all this streaming.
Suicide watch has now begun on the US postal service who currently is a $600 million dollar a year beneficiary of Netflix’s disc through the mail service.
