Warning, may contain some spoilers…
We know that this isn’t the typical movie you would see reviewed on this site. But if you are forced into one sappy chick flick this winter, make sure it is this one. Why WGUB do you ask? One of its defining characteristic allows it make the cut. You get to see Anne Hathaway nude.
That aside, this movie is actually great. It is centered around a drug sales rep Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is trying to make the cut in the highly competitive drug sales biz. He scores the big one in getting to push Viagra (The movie is set in 1996) and of course he is successful as hell. Cause sex sells! Along the way he meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway) who he immediately falls in love with (who wouldn’t).
Maggie is struggling with Parkinson’s disease which throws numerous wrench into the mix as their love grows. What is so great about this movie is that it is shot in those intimate moments when two people are falling for each other. If I had to wager, I would say that at least 40% of this movie was shot in some form of a bed or bedroom.
In the end, Jamie goes full court press to try to find a cure for Maggie’s condition. Which of course only pushes Maggie away from him. After the required separation time where each person misses the other, the awkward bumping into each other at the restaurant, the big promotion for one character, we get the dramatic scene as Jamie chases down Maggie and confesses his love for her. All is now right in the world.
This movie isn’t for the prudish. It pulls the R rating for a reason, but all that aside it makes the cut as one of the better romantic comedies of the year. Mostly because of the great acting of Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal.
On a side note, why is it that Hollywood insists on putting the fat guy side kick into movies? It seems like a new trend and while it adds humor, you are seeing it more and more these days.
