Oh sure, you’ve heard about iPad killers. Tablet this, and tablet that. Well now it is Amazon’s turn to step into the ring to take on the great and powerful Apple. Today, the Kindle Fire dropped and frankly, we like the Fire’s odds in this fight.
True, the Kindle Fire has an uphill battle. It is getting into the game a few years late, but we think that might be a good thing. Amazon has waited and capitalized on a lot of tech advancements over the last few years. Designed with the cloud in mind, now is the time to harness this capability and run with it.
This Kindle isn’t your mother’s. Sure you can wrap your head around as many e-books as Amazon can offer, but you can also browse the web, check email, stream movies, shop, play Angry Birds, and pretty much everything else that a normal person would want to do with a new toy. It supports just about every document type, so no worries there. Battery life is good at a nice 8 hours. The screen is full color and it is smaller than the iPad at 7 inches. Sometimes, size does matter. And it is a Droid, making it open for the flexibility that Droid users know and love.
The most attractive part about the Kindle Fire has to be its price point. At $199 it makes it half the price of the cheapest iPad. Very attractive, kind of like 7th grade best friends mother right?
We don’t know if this will kill the iPad, we doubt that will happen. But what we do think it will do is fill a nice vacuum that is there for people who just can’t afford or justify shelling out $500 for a tablet that they might not use everyday. But with Amazon’s pre-orders on the product well into the millions, watch out holiday season. In fact, know Amazon’s very savvy marketing, I wouldn’t be surprised if you see the Kindle on special at least once before that fat bastard in a red suit comes down your chimney.
